About this trip

This is a great guided fly fishing trip but not really for beginning fly fishermen. Narrow, small streams and lots of overhanging trees can make some brook trout rivers a bit of a technical trip even for experienced fly casters (or those who don’t mind snagging trees and losing flies!). Although small streams with a lot of over hanging vegetation are typical of the streams we fish in the Shenandoah National Park and George Washington National Forest there are some that can be more user friendly.

On the upside of brook trout fishing in Virginia, they are very opportunistic feeders and due to the smaller size of waters they live in, long casts are often not required. We suggest anything from a 6′ 2wt to a 9′ 4wt. During your day you will learn strategies on how to approach these small streams without spooking the fish and great casting techniques for tight quarters. Being successful while brookie fishing has much more to do with the way the fly is presented verses which exact fly you are using. Fish are typically on the smaller side but can be up to 16” and always stunning.

Depending on water levels and temperatures our typical seasons for brook trout are, fall, winter, and spring. However, if we have mild, wet summers we will guide for them year round.

Our guides have spent countless hours, days, weeks and years exploring many of the beautiful and productive brook trout streams in Virginia. We have extensive knowledge of local mountain streams and would love to share this unique experience of catching the native Brook Trout of the East Coast with you.

Although we can catch brook trout in Virginia year round, sometime water levels get to low and warm during hot dry summers. Our smallmouth floats are a great option during the heat of summer.
